Across time and space, meeting on the Internet. On July 13, 2020, the seminar "PDE Numerical Calculation and Application Based on Machine Learning" jointly sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China Tianyuan Fund of Mathematics and Jilin University and jointly organized by the Northeast Center of National Tianyuan Mathematics and Jilin University was held online. This seminar was convened by Academician Jiang Song, Director of the Department of Mathematics and Science of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. More than 800 experts, scholars and students from Princeton University, Brown University, Columbia University, Lausanne Federal Institute of Technology, Peking University, Zhejiang University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Jilin University, etc. gathered on the Internet to share an academic feast. Academician Zhang Xi, President of Jilin University, and Academician Jiang Song, Director of the Department of Mathematics and Science of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, attended the opening ceremony of the online seminar and delivered speeches.

Zhang Xi welcomed the participating experts on behalf of the school. He first thanked all the experts and scholars for their long-term care and support for the development and construction of Jilin University and Tianyuan Mathematics Northeast Center. He pointed out that if a country wanted to be strong in science and technology, the strength of mathematics would be crucial; to run an internationally renowned comprehensive university, it must have first-class mathematics subjects. Based on this, Jilin University always regarded the construction of mathematics as a priority development strategy. This seminar was about the research of related issues in the field of machine learning, which was one of the core research areas of artificial intelligence. Its degree of integration with society was deepening and it was widely used in various fields. The holding of this seminar would promote exchanges and cooperation between scholars in related fields, and it was expected that the collision of different ways of thinking would bring new sparks of innovation and bred major breakthroughs in machine learning and artificial intelligence research.

In his speech, Jiang Song first expressed his warm welcome and heartfelt thanks to the experts and scholars who attended the meeting. He pointed out that Tianyuan Mathematics Northeast Center has received strong support and help from Jilin University since its establishment, and has done a lot of fruitful work for the development of Chinese mathematics, especially the development of computational mathematics, analysis and statistics, and the training of young talents. Machine learning has gradually become the focus of attention from all walks of life. The numerical algorithm of partial differential equations based on machine learning has become a key common technical problem in the field of computational mathematics and applied mathematics. Mathematics is not only the basic scientific language in the human knowledge system, but also an important scientific tool for mankind to explore and transform the world. The wide application of mathematics fundamentally promotes the progress of science and technology. He hoped that through this online seminar, the wisdom of experts at home and abroad would be gathered to promote exchanges and cooperation between domestic and foreign peer scholars, and jointly promote breakthroughs in the field of machine learning and artificial intelligence research.

At the seminar, Academician Yue Weinan of Princeton University, Professor Bao Gang of Zhejiang University, Professor Du Qiang of Columbia University, Professor Cai Wei of North Carolina State University, Professor George Karniadakis of Brown University, Professor Jan S. Hesthaven of Lausanne Federal Institute of Technology, Shanghai 17 top mathematicians and young scholars from universities at home and abroad, including Professor Jin Shi of Jiaotong University, Professor Liu Tiegang of Beihang University, Professor Dongbin Xiu of Ohio State University, and other top-level mathematicians and young scholars from domestic and foreign universities gave wonderful reports to discuss the key issues of the numerical algorithm of partial differential equations based on machine learning, Jointly seeking solutions for numerical algorithms of partial differential equations in many application fields. The articipating scholars asked questions via online voice or messages, and experts answered online in real time. The interactive scene was enthusiastic and the exchanges were in-depth.

The holding of this seminar was to meet the needs of the development of the times, and to seize the major strategic opportunities in the development of artificial intelligence. It would help build my country's first-mover advantage in the development of artificial intelligence, and contribute wisdom to accelerating the construction of an innovative country and a world scientific and technological power.

In the special period of epidemic prevention and control, the National Tianyuan Mathematics Northeast Center innovated its work ideas, built an online academic exchange platform, used multiple ports of the Zoom platform to broadcast live, and broadcast simultaneously at station B. The number of participants on the live broadcast platform was nearly 1,000, and the number of website broadcasts exceeded 10,000. It has received extensive attention from the academic community, providing an active exchange platform for research in the field of artificial intelligence, and a learning platform for undergraduates and graduate students to get in touch with academic frontiers and understand the latest developments in machine learning. The National Tianyuan Mathematics Northeast Center would continue to use the advantages of the platform to provide various forms of online academic activities for researchers and students, to gather professional wisdom, stimulate innovative vitality, and to jointly promote the cross-integration and comprehensive development of mathematics and related disciplines through pulling the wisdom and efforts of everyone .
