Brief Introduction to the History of School of Mathematics

The Development of School of Mathematics, Jilin University

(1952-present)

In 1952, the state adjusted the teaching positions of universities across the country. The state aimed to build a comprehensive university on the basis of the northeast industrial base. To this end, The State Council sent a group of well-known professors and scholars from key universities such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Yenching University and Northeast Institute of Technology to Changchun. The Department of Mathematics was established in Northeast Renmin University (now Jilin University), which is also one of the earliest scientific disciplines established in Northeast Renmin University.

When the Mathematics Department was founded initially, there were only 14 teachers. Under the strong support of the University, under the leadership of Professor Wang Xianghao, the first dean of the Department of Mathematics and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, with the joint efforts of a group of well-known scholars with profound academic skills, such as Jiang Zejian, Xu Lizhi, Xie Bangjie, Wang Ruohuai, Lv Hongfan, Zhou Guangya, Sun Yifeng, the Department of Mathematics has developed into a mathematics discipline with relatively complete subject categories and relatively excellent faculties.

After 1957, the College set up computational mathematics, mechanics, cybernetics, applied mathematics, mathematical statistics and other majors, and sent a large number of distinguished teachers to support the establishment of the School of Computer Science, the Business School, the Public Computer Teaching and Research Center, and the Quantitative Economics Research Center of Jilin University, making positive contributions to the development of Jilin University.

In 1978, School of Mathematics was established with the approval of the former State Education Commission.

In 1985, School of Mathematics was approved to establish a post-doctoral research station in mathematics.

In 1991, it became the first batch of "National Basic Scientific Research and Teaching Talent Training Base". In 1999, it was named "National Excellent Talent Training Base" and officially listed in 2002. In 2009, the mathematics base was rated as the advanced collective of the education system of Jilin Province.

In 1994, the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of "Symbolic Computing and Knowledge Engineering" was jointly established with the School of Computer Science.

In 1997, it was approved by the state as a first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization point in mathematics.

In April 2001, the mathematics departments (offices) of five colleges including Jilin University, Jilin University of Technology, Bethune Medical University, Changchun University of Science and Technology, and Changchun University of Posts and Telecommunications were merged into a new school of mathematics. Since then, mathematics entered a new stage of vigorous development.

In September 2003, the mathematics building was completed and put into use. The office environment in the building is comfortable with advanced office furniture, which provides a better teaching, scientific research and learning environment for teachers and students.

In 2006, the insurance actuarial major in statistics was established and undergraduates were recruited.

In 2007, computational mathematics and applied mathematics were rated as national key disciplines, and mathematics was recognized as a first-level national key discipline. The major of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computing Science were approved as the professional construction base of colleges and universities in Jilin Province, and the major of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics was approved as the national first-class major.

In 2008, the School of Mathematics began to recruit postgraduates in insurance actuarial science jointly with the School of Economics of Jilin University. The teaching team of the National Mathematics Talent Training Base was identified as a national teaching team.

In 2009, the School of Mathematics and the School of Economics of Jilin University jointly established the School of Finance and the Institute of Finance of Jilin University. Meantime, the Experimental Plan for Training Top Talents in Basic Disciplines was implemented.

In 2011, the School of Mathematics began to recruit full-time professional degree masters, including two majors: applied statistics and insurance. The Department of Statistics was approved as the first batch of doctoral programs in statistics first-level disciplines in the country.

In 2012, according to the evaluation of the Ministry of Education's Degree and Graduate Education Development Center, the mathematics discipline in Jilin University ranked 8th in the country.

In 2014, the Statistics discipline was rated as a key discipline with advantages and characteristics in the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" of Jilin Province.

In 2017, the discipline of mathematics was selected into the ranks of the national "double first-class" discipline construction.

In 2018, the Tianyuan Mathematical Center in Northeast China was established (one of the first batch in the country).

In 2019, the mathematics major entered the top 1% of the world in the ESI ranking. In the same year, the Mathematics and Applied Mathematics major became one of the first batch of first-class undergraduate majors in the country.

In 2020, National Center for Applied Mathematics in Jilin was established (the first batch in the country).

In 2021, it was selected as a Class A base of the Sino-Russian Mathematics Center. In the same year, the Statistics major became a national first-class undergraduate major.

In 2023, the mathematics and physics disciplines jointly established the “Material Simulation Methods and Software” Key Laboratory of Ministry of Education. At the same time, the establishment of Jilin Provincial Key Laboratory of Computational Modeling and Intelligent Algorithms and Applications for International Science and Technology Cooperation was approved.
