The Seminar on Project Topics of the National Key R&D Program “Mathematics and Applied Research” was held at Jilin University

On June 13, the seminar for the National Key R&D Program's Special Project on “Mathematical and Applied Research”, titled “Mathematical Theory and Computational Methods for Inverse Problems of Stochastic Wave Equations”, was held at Zhengxin Building, Jilin University. Professor Bao Gang, Qiu Shi Chair Professor of Zhejiang University and head of the expert panel, and Zhang Ran, member of the Party Committee and Vice President of Jilin University, attended the seminar and delivered addresses.

In her speech, Zhang Ran, on behalf of Party Secretary Tian Hui and President Zhang Xi, extended a warm welcome and sincere thanks to the attending experts and scholars. She briefly introduced Jilin University's educational development and the construction of its mathematics discipline. She stated that the university has always adhered to the principle of cultivating virtue through education, continuously strengthening the mathematics discipline, and relying on the National Tianyuan Mathematics Northeast Center to continuously enhance academic exchanges and the country's capacity for scientific and technological innovation. She pointed out that the project discussed in this seminar is aligned with the national strategic needs for deep-earth resource exploration, focusing on the research of mathematical theories and computational methods for inverse problems of stochastic wave equations. This is of great significance for promoting the deep integration of fundamental mathematical research with major application needs and serving national energy security. Jilin University will conscientiously fulfill its responsibilities as the project undertaking institution, fully support the research, strengthen collaborative efforts with partner institutions, and promote the development of high-level and landmark research outcomes. She expressed the hope that this seminar could serve as an opportunity to further deepen exchanges and cooperation, jointly contributing to the high-quality development of China’s mathematics discipline.

In his speech, Bao Gang expressed gratitude to all the attending experts for visiting his alma mater, Jilin University, and sincerely congratulated the university on its achievements in talent cultivation and discipline development in recent years. He stated that since the project's initiation, various research groups have conducted multiple exchanges and discussions, and this form of “regular communication” is worthy of full recognition. He conveyed important concepts to the attending experts in accordance with the relevant management requirements of the National Key R&D Program. Specialized projects under the National Key R&D Program should be demand-oriented and problem-solving. The core of project evaluation does not lie in the number of papers published or patents obtained, but in “what kinds of problems have been solved”. He emphasized that projects should always be oriented toward major national needs, focus on practical issues, and produce more prominent and landmark outcomes, effectively serving the country's major strategic needs in the relevant fields and enabling researchers to make their due contributions toward significant breakthroughs in research in these areas.

The opening ceremony of the seminar was presided over by the project leader, Li Peijun, a researcher at the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences.


At the seminar, the responsible colleagues of the four research topics under the special project—“Modeling and Theory of Inverse Problems for Stochastic Wave Equations”,“Numerical Methods for Stochastic Wave Equations”, “Theory and Numerical Methods for Inverse Problems of Wave Equations in Complex Media”, and “Computational Methods and Applications for Inverse Problems of Stochastic Wave Equations”—each reported on the progress of their respective research topics. Participants engaged in extensive exchanges regarding the research progress and challenges encountered, and discussed the main tasks for the next phase of work.

It is reported that this project is led by the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with Jilin University, Zhejiang University, the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhejiang University of Technology, and other institutions. It received approval and support from the National Natural Science Foundation of China in December 2024.
