报告摘要:Ion channels-large proteins embedded in cell membranes-provide major pathways for ions to move through membranes in order for cells to communicate with each other to monitor and perform almost all biological functions. There is no doubt that ionic flows present extremely rich dynamical behaviors, for which protein structures are the most important factors. Experiments on ion channels, particularly on protein structures, have advanced greatly. On the other hand, it is nearly impossible to extract critical information on ionic flows from current measurements.

In this talk, we will consider the Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) system, the basic primitive models for ionic flows, and discuss a geometric singular perturbation (GSP) framework for analyzing dynamics of PNP models. The general GSP theory that we applied is based on the modern invariant manifold theory of nonlinear dynamics but, most crucially, this framework relies on special structures of the problem at hand. As an illustration of nontrivial findings from this research activity, we will report our studies of protein structure effects on ionic flows, some effects seem rather counter-intuitive.

The talk is based on my researches with many collaborators to be acknowledged throughout the talk.
