Title: Category theory and its applications.

Time:April 17-26,2024

Location:The Fifth Seminar Room, the third floor of the Math Building

Speaker:Andrey Lazarev

Abstract:  Category theory is a study of global aspects of mathematics and as such, it is relevant to all its subfields, especially algebra and geometry. From another point of view, category theory is a unifying language in which different, seemingly unrelated mathematical results and problems can be formulated and explained.

In this minicourse, fundamental concepts of categories, functors and natural transformations will be developed from scratch. Various examples will be given; in order to understand them it is useful to be familiar with such notions as groups, rings, vector spaces, topological spaces, homomorphisms and homeomorphisms. The category of topological spaces will be given as a primary example.
